Golden, crispy potato skins with a soft, fluffy center, topped with melted butter, salt, and black pepper. This classic American baked potato recipe is simple, delicious, and perfect as a side dish or comforting meal!
60–70 minutes
Ingredients
4 large russet potatoes
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ cup sour cream
2 tablespoons fresh chopped chives
Optional: shredded cheddar cheese, crispy bacon bits, or garlic powder
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
2. Prepare the potatoes
Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly. Dry them completely with a clean towel. Pierce each potato several times with a fork.
3. Season the skins
Rub each potato with olive oil and sprinkle generously with coarse sea salt.
4. Bake until crispy
Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet. Bake for 50–65 minutes, depending on their size, until the skins are golden and crispy and the insides are tender.
5. Add butter
Remove the potatoes from the oven. Carefully slice each one lengthwise and gently fluff the inside with a fork. Add butter and freshly ground black pepper.
6. Add toppings
Serve with sour cream and freshly chopped chives. Add cheddar cheese or crispy bacon if desired.
Tips for Perfect Baked Potatoes
Extra crispy skin: Make sure the potatoes are completely dry before adding oil.
Fluffy inside: Russet potatoes work best because of their high starch content.
Avoid foil wrapping: It traps moisture and makes the skin soft instead of crispy.
Best flavor: Add butter while the potatoes are still hot so it melts into the fluffy center.
